Within the city limits of Walnut Creek, California, there is a retirement community known as Rossmoor. Over the years Rossmoor has grown until it now has a population approaching ten thousand in number. More than twenty-five years ago Dr. Robert C. Stevens, who still lives in Walnut Creek, started a Bible study class in Rossmoor. Dr. Stevens, at one time a college professor, was for several years associated with Miss Johnson, the founder of the well-known Bible course for lay-persons known as "Bible Study Fellowship." Subsequently, Dr. Stevens has prepared and published his own study program, known as "Church Bible Studies." Over the years, the Rossmoor Bible Study Class, which now has an average attendance of between 50 and 60, has had a succession of teachers. It was this writer's privilege to teach the class from September, 1999 to November, 2002. Nearly two years ago, there was a desire to study the Gospel of Luke, for which Dr. Stevens had prepared no material. So this writer undertook to write a study manual for the class, and the Lessons became the primary study source for the course taught in 2002, from early January to the latter part of May. The format of the sessions was as follows: each week the class participants study the manual and prepare answers to the questions at the end of the lesson material. On meeting days (once a week) the students met in groups of about 10 to 15 in number to discuss the questions; after which in a general assembly the teacher would interpret the Bible passage under study, in a lecture lasting about thirty minutes. The lessons on Luke were seemingly well-received. Now this writer thinks it might be useful for a wider group to have the lesson material. Accordingly, the series, "Looking into Luke," is being placed on this web-site. It is being presented just as it was given in the study manual used in Rossmoor. We hope you will like it and find it helpful. |
